Blog Post #2: Ted Talk Reflections Privacy

These TED Talks' topics have the potential to significantly affect both individuals and society at large. For instance, our online behavior can leave a lasting digital trail that may impact our reputation and close doors in the future when trying to find employment. The tracking of our actions and movements by the police can result in privacy violations and potential discrimination. Governments and private citizens alike may employ surveillance for illicit ends, raising concerns about security and trust. Last but not least, the effects of revenge porn can be horrifying, resulting in psychological and emotional trauma as well as harm to one's personal and professional life. All these topics discussed in the videos have a negative effect on my friends and family. I want my family and friends to present themselves in kind and caring ways on social media and the internet. I believe these issues can directly affect me right now by being in college and people are always taking photos and videos. You never know if you might be in the background of something or there’s a slight possibility someones videoing you and you don’t even know it.

The government is obligated to uphold the security and privacy rights of its people. Regulations and policies can be implemented regarding online activity to safeguard people from exploitation and false information. To stop abuses and safeguard privacy, the government can also control the use of surveillance technologies. Additionally, laws can be created to protect individuals from the impact of revenge porn. I believe the government should be enforcing private accounts across all platforms. As someone who has all their media accounts on follower requests only. I feel some sense of security knowing I know who is seeing my content and who can share it around. I also believe it is important for our government to crack down on social media companies and make stricter laws and regulations on the sharing of information and the use of the information you’ve given to you account to stay at your discretion if you would want to share it.

Some of the best ways we can protect ourselves from the invasion of privacy is by keeping passwords to ourselves. You should not be sharing your passwords or logging in on others' laptops. They have the ability most of the time to get back into the account and look at your information. Whether that is just a social media platform or it’s your actual google account. Another way we can protect ourselves is by being aware of our surroundings. Ensuring you know the people you are around and knowing how they act is important since if you know your friend is an upcoming YouTuber documenting their college life you don’t want to be doing anything that could get you in trouble with the law or with just your own personal ethics. That friend may be recording! Lastly, it is most important to be aware of the image you are perceiving of yourself on the internet, whether thats through your private Instagram account or your public facebook you should be keeping your social media content work environment friendly.
